Death of Jean Chanussot, former director of the IUT in Le Creusot
Jean Chanussot, former director of IUT du Creusot from 1985 to 1997, has passed away at the age of 86. He left a lasting mark on the history of the institution, of which he was one of the principal architects since its opening in 1975. He leaves behind a legacy as a key figure in local academic development and student success.
Born in Mâcon, he trained in physics after attending the École normale d’instituteurs, becoming a lecturer and researcher in Dijon before joining IUT du Creusot in 1975. As a lecturer and the first head of the Electrical Engineering department (later renamed GEII), he went on to serve as director of the IUT from 1985 to 1997.
Under his leadership, the institution expanded significantly with the creation of the Business Techniques department in 1989. In the same year, the IUT opened a branch in Chalon-sur-Saône under his direction. This branch went on to offer three successive DUT programmes: Logistics and Transport Management (1989), Industrial Engineering and Maintenance (1992) and Materials Science and Engineering (1996), before becoming the IUT de Chalon-sur-Saône in 2001.
Although retired, Jean Chanussot remained involved in the life of the IUT, notably by taking part in the video produced to mark the institution’s 50th anniversary. His work has left a lasting mark on higher education in Creusot.
At this time of mourning, our thoughts are with his family and loved ones.
