First harvests have begun at Université Bourgogne Europe’s estate!

A few days ago, the Institut Universitaire de la Vigne et du Vin Jules Guyot began harvesting the plots on its estate used to produce crémants for Université Bourgogne Europe. Students, lecturers, researchers and technical staff have all rallied together for this key stage in the wine-making cycle.

A promising harvest

The first bunches harvested are of excellent quality, promising a particularly favourable vintage. This harvest is part of the practical and experimental work carried out at the institute, a true platform for innovation serving the wine industry.

Beyond the educational and scientific aspects, these harvests are also a highlight of the academic year. They embody the spirit of collaboration and shared passion for vines, wine and research that drives the entire IUVV community.

A unique university estate in France

Covering 3 hectares, Université Bourgogne Europe’s estate is managed by the IUVV team. Its aim is to train students in initial and continuing education in the scientific fields of viticulture, oenology, wine product marketing and wine tourism.

The estate’s mission is:

  • To provide university researchers and teachers with the plant material and products developed on its estate that are deemed necessary for their activities.
  • To serve as a place for the application of specialised teaching in vine and wine sciences and to welcome French and foreign trainees.
  • To enable the necessary experiments to be carried out to study regional and national issues, with the possible collaboration of other organisations.

The Marsannay appellation d’origine contrôlée (AOC) is unique in Burgundy in that it produces fine wines in three colours: red, white and rosé. But this is not its only distinctive feature. Université Bourgogne Europe is the only French university to have its own vineyard, dedicated to training, research and experimentation in the field of viticulture and winemaking.

Appreciated and award-winning wines

On numerous occasions, UBE wines have won medals, notably the 2019 Marsannay Rouge (silver medal), the 2019 Marsannay Blanc and the 2020 Marsannay Blanc (gold medals), the 2022 Bourgogne Rouge (rated 93-94/100 by the tasting committee of the Revue du Vin de France) and, more recently, the 2023 Bourgogne Rouge (bronze and silver medals).
